Using the signal meters on my Sony tv and Digitalstream 9950 box, I can say that both amplifiers produce similar results but for weaker stations, the Radio Shack works better for me. I keep the boost switch off and the gain control at the maximum and that has worked best. If you have that ON and the gain control is anywhere past a quarter turn, it will overload the tuner. I also have a EV RE 50b and INMO they sound just as good as the EV though not altogether the same. In my unit, P2 plugs into an old Radio Shack amplified speaker with a volume control. T1 provides isolation to the speaker, and the secondary connects to P2. It is directly connected to J1, which the headphones plug into. Since you can get them so cheap on ebay they are certainly worth it. P1 plugs into the headphone jack of the radio. I have three of the Radio Shack/realistic mics and they sound great I paid $5 for one $3 for another and $6 for the last. If you watch on the scene type interviews to this day the RE 50 is the main mic you see used but you can spot a sure version every once in a while. Of course once Shure had a RE 50 clone they started selling them under their own brand to broadcasters as a alternative to the RE 50. You never know when someone wants to plug their 1/4 plug.
